Cut Through the Noise Around Narcissism with the Leading Researcher in the Field

“Narcissism” is truly one of the most important words of our time―ceaselessly discussed in the media, the subject of millions of online search queries, and at the center of serious social and political debates. But what does it really mean?

In The New Science of Narcissism, Dr. W. Keith Campbell pulls back the curtain on this frequently misused label, presenting the most recent psychological, personality, and social research into the phenomenon.

Rather than pathologizing all behaviors associated with the label, Campbell reveals that not only does narcissism occur on a spectrum, but almost everyone exhibits narcissistic tendencies in their day-to-day behavior. Drawing from real-life incidents and case studies, The New Science of Narcissism offers tools, tips, and suggestions for softening toxically selfish behaviors both in yourself and others. Here you will discover:

· An exploration of personality disorders connected with and adjacent to narcissism
· Why minor narcissistic tendencies are common in most people
· The foundational difference between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism
· Different psychological models of personality and how they interpret narcissistic behaviors
· The “recipe” of mental and emotional traits that combine into narcissism
· How to identify when you’re in a relationship with a narcissist and what you can do about it
· Why the 21st century has seen the rise of a “Great Fantasy Migration” into evermore insular subcultures
· The connection between narcissistic tendencies and leadership
· Why “the audience in your pocket” of social media has exacerbated culture-wide narcissistic tendencies

Though narcissism looms large in our cultural consciousness, The New Science of Narcissism offers many different options for understanding and treating it. With Campbell’s straightforward and grounded guidance, you’ll not only discover the latest and best information on the condition, but also a hopeful view of its future.

Fantastic book! This is not like a youtube video where people say: here are the traits blah blah. This book has taken a step back to explain psychology as a whole- how things are labeled. How science has developed and how traits combine/ are seen in groups together. It opened my eyes! A GREAT non-fiction read!

This book verified a lot of things I knew, as an empath, I attract narcissists. I found the 4 different types of empaths a fascinating take on a subject I know a lot about. I'd say I'm somewhere between a blue and green since they classify us by colors. I'm one of those that thinks "I know what you are, you don't fool me"! This book gives sound advice on how to recognize narcissists and gives great tips on how to handle them. A great guide for anybody who has to live or work with this type of personality.

Interesting descriptions of degrees of narcissism. It seems we all must have a little bit of self promotion or there is no self esteem. It's all in deciding at what point is it too much of a good thing and when does it become clinical and maybe even dangerous to be around these behaviours. He outlines narcissism similar to his other books using colors to categorize For anyone seeking clarification, this is a good reference. It can get pretty deep and confusing so I'd advise taking notes unless you're skimming thru just to see what it's all about. Excellent descriptions and examples are provided.
I was provided an advanced reader copy but was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions expressed are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me access to the book.

Narcissism is a word thrown around a great deal recently. I hear " He's a Narcissist " , S,he has Narcissistic tendencies" .In the culture of today's world where one is taught to put themselves first, it is not a surprise that there may be such thoughts. So what exactly is a person like who is a Narcissist? This is the first book I've read on this subject that delved in deep to every characteristic., beginning with the fact that Narcissism is a personality disorder. There is no medication that will fix it or any therapy that would cure it. What is the difference between a person that has a great self esteem and is successful and a Narcissist?. Read this book to have that question answered in a crystal clear way. Many examples of behaviors in various situations. In one of the ending Cahapters there is a test on "Are you a Narcissist? This is a book that I will re read and refer to.

Truly excellent. Identifying characteristics of a narcissist is crucial. They really do exist in every social situation: jobs, families, clubs, church communities, etc. This book is a terrific guide in defining, recognizing, and managing someone with NPD ( to an extent.) Important for parents, adult children, employers, employees...really anyone. Being around the behavior for long periods of time can have devastating effects. Victims of it will learn that the narcissist's patterns are not their fault. Recommended!

Thomas Erickson continues his Surrounded by Idiots series with an engaging and informative study of narcissistic traits in “Surrounded by Narcissists”. This book helps its readers to recognize narcissistic traits and provides some tips to address them according to their color of human behavior. I especially enjoyed the discussion on well-intentioned actions that can nurture and encourage narcissistic traits.

I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about these traits and ways to protect your sanity.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Essentials for the DRC of “Surrounded by Narcissists”.

This book is an excellent layman's introduction to narcissism and how you can deal with narcissists you may encounter in your life. The many examples and anecdotes of this type of behavior helped me to understand what narcissism is and how I can handle it on a daily basis. I was even helped to understand some of my own narcissistic behaviors. The writing is very clear, and assuming English is not the author's first language, the author is very fluent in the text. I did find a few examples of sentences that I had to read a couple of times in order to get the meaning, but the book far and away is smooth sailing and the development of the subject is direct and logical from start to finish.*

I was provided an advanced copy of this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

One of my degrees is in Neuroscience, so I have a bit of a background and interest in psychology. That being said, I found this book a bit of a primer on narcissism. It's an excellent book for examining the study of personality psychology and how narcissism fits into the puzzle - and how the puzzle of personality can create a narcissist. However, if you're looking for something more scientific or dense, this isn't the book. This is definitely for the layperson, which isn't a bad thing - it's very readable, almost conversational, and it makes the material very easy to understand as such.
