What is the Socratic method? How can we bring the Socratic method into the middle school and high school classroom? How does one lead a Socratic discussion? How does one develop the discussion skills of students? Using passages from the works of Plato and Xenophon, Teach Like Socrates answers each of these questions, clearly explaining the most famous and the most misunderstood teaching method in the world. Unrivaled as a constructive method for guidance in critical thinking and problem solving, the Socratic method can be brought into the classroom every day for the inductive exploration of ideas and scaffolded problem solving as well as for cooperative discussion. The book includes templates, sample lesson plans, and discussion games. Socratic teaching leads students to critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning. Every teacher should be familiar with the Socratic method.

This book was much better than I expected it to be. I was looking for a traditional approach to Socratic dialog (not Socratic circles, etc.). While this book leaves room for the newest applications and lists the part of the common core that are being addressed, it goes much deeper than that. The first chapters explain what Socratic dialog & discussion are, then Wilberding goes through examples of using Socratic dialog for different purposes. Finally, he gives explicit instructions on 3 class lessons that can be used to teach students what the Socratic method is about and how to better engage in it.

In providing a primer on the theory and practice of Socratic inquiry, Erick Wilberding has plugged a hole in the literature of teaching and learning. Informed by close reading and a deep understanding of the ancient texts, Teach Like Socrates invites the reader to discover the Socratic approach to inquiry through the dialogues of Plato, and provides a guide for bringing the method into the classrooms and to the seminar tables of the twenty-first century. Following the opening chapters, which introduce the core concepts of inductive reasoning, critical thinking, and the art of questioning, a handful of chapters provide guidance to the practitioner who would like to conduct a Socratic dialogue or discussion, teach students the Socratic method, and provide them with experience and guidance in the art of shared inquiry. To his credit, Wilberding has written in a refreshingly direct and jargon-free manner, without sacrificing any of the complexity and beauty of the material. Neither the philosophical-minded nor the practitioner in search of a guidebook will be disappointed. As a humanities teacher in a high school, I (and my students) have profited immensely from this concise and rich guide to Socratic inquiry. Teachers at all levels and of all disciplines who wish to enrich their students' learning and equip them with twenty-first century skills will find inspiration and practical guidance in this book. Every library should have a copy, and every teacher-training program should assign it.
