Updating and reformulating Aaron T. Beck’s pioneering cognitive model of anxiety disorders, this book is both authoritative and highly practical. The authors synthesize the latest thinking and empirical data on anxiety treatment and offer step-by-step instruction in cognitive assessment, case formulation, cognitive restructuring, and behavioral intervention. They provide evidence-based mini-manuals for treating the five most common anxiety disorders: panic disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. User-friendly features include vivid case examples, concise “Clinician Guidelines” that reinforce key points, and over three dozen reproducible handouts and forms.

    A must have
Maybe not a self help guide (Beck wrote another self help book) but a good book on the theory. You must have this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still useful after all these years
Although this book is based on DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, the information and interventions are still very useful and helpful. Good book

I took a couple of CBT classes taught at the Beck's institute. It was a lot of material and I could not retain every single concept. That is why I bought the book. It contains all the material covered in the course and some. Not an easy read, but an excellent reference guide.

As a neophyte in the area of CBT it was exactly what I needed as a companion to Judith Becks, CBT basics and beyond. Just finishing up my beloved MAMFC ( Ma in Marriage and Family Counselling). I start my Internship at an Addiction Treatment Center where CBT is the treatment of choice for both anxiety and depression: as well Group Therapy is the method of choice where Irvin Yalom's approach is utilized. So guess what? I also bought his book, Group Psychotherapy, Theory and Practice here on Amazon but chose the KINDLE version for now my library is a portable and always accessible from my laptop no matter where I am. THe kindle version allows me to not have to carry heavy books with me, but to access them all on my laptop.

This book has been a great resource for doing therapy, really well written and a very good go-to guide. However some of the chapters on treatment for specific disorders were a bit disappointing (just a bit) in that they are not detailed enough. For example the one on Panic Disorder kinda leaves you hanging with regard to interoceptive exposure, The one on Social Phobia also leaves you with a few questions regarding the use of exposure. Also, the chapter on behavioral interventions was a bit of a let down as well. Especially the section on exposure therapy. The authors do not make any reference to the new exposure model (inhibitory learning model) and instead they keep to the old emotional processing theory. Still, a great guide that I really recomend as a first (or second, maybe Barlow's 2002 volume) read on anxiety disorders.

Great reference book. I keep going back to it. Although it is written mainly for clinicians, it is still a very useful text for learning

If you're looking for self help material this is not the product for you. If you want a thorough and complete guide for treating anxiety disorders using CBT by the most prominent practitioners and theorists of CBT, with the most up to date, research grounded, theoretically based texts then this is the book for you. Well worth the cost, Probably not too usefull for th traines but certainly for the advanced practioner or at least someone looking for extra depth and more complex solutions, probably most suitable for someone who uses CBT daily or as a major component of the therapeutic interventions they provide. This book provides a greater understanding and more complex models of the most common anxiety disorders (With the exception of specific phobias and Health Anxiety).

The book provides models and formulations for GAD, Panic, Social Phobia, PTSD and OCD as well as general guide to the diagnosing, assessing, formulating and treating of anxiety disorders. It also provides information and guides about the cognitive and behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders, these elements are then made specific for each of the anxiety disorders in the text.

All in all a very thorough and deep text for any pratcicing CBT therapist.

Esential reading for the CBT practitioner.

    Sean Mellor CBT Therapist.
